The N.C. Board of Education voted Thursday on nominees to its new N.C. Public Charter School Advisory Council. And two familiar local names are on the list – New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Tim Markley and Baker Mitchell Jr., co-founder of The Roger Bacon Academy Charter School in Leland.
Of the currently approved members, Markley is the only active public school superintendent on the council.
Markley was one of Gov. Beverly Purdue’s eight appointees. The board is waiting for four more recommendations from other government bodies to complete the 15-member advisory council. The state advisory council was created after the General Assembly lifted the 100-school cap on charter schools in North Carolina. The council will be responsible for suggesting public charter school policies to the state board, timelines and standards and approval, rejection or revocation of public charters.
Markley has said that he would consider remaking the temporarily closed Virgo Middle School as a charter or magnet program downtown.
